The Fall of Icarus

Unit 4:The History of the Airplane

The story of Daedalus and Icarus is one of the most well-known Greek Myths. The Ancient Greeks believed that Daedalus was an exceptionally skilled craftsman who was responsible for inventing several carpentry tools. There are many different endings to this story, as you will see. In some versions of the story, Daedalus escapes safe and sound from Crete and King Minos' kingdom and mourns the loss of his child. In memory of his son, he names the spot where Icarus plunged to his death the Icarian Sea.

In this Lesson the pupils:

1. Get to know the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, which is considered "the first flight accident",

2. Compare different versions and endings of the story of Daedalus and Icarus,

3. Use of the Simple Past/ Past Continuous/Progressive Tense so as to narrate past events related to the story,

4. Find how this Greek Myth influenced many artists (teamwork-painting/literature/music),

5. Express their version of the myth in their own work of art ( teamwork- creation of a poem, song, or painting)

Υπάρχει η αρκετά διαδεδομένη αντίληψη ότι για να εισάγει κανείς πολιτισμικά στοιχεία, όπως καλλιτεχνικά ή λογοτεχνικά έργα, στο μάθημα των Αγγλικών πρέπει το επίπεδο γλωσσομάθειας του μαθητικού κοινού να είναι αρκετά προχωρημένο. Ευτυχώς αναπτύσσονται διδακτικά σενάρια που ανατρέπουν αυτή την αντίληψη!

Το παρακάτω ψηφιακό διδακτικό σενάριο -αναρτημένο στην ιστοσελίδα Αίσωπος του Ινστιτούτου Εκπαιδευτικής Πολιτικής (ΙΕΠ) και αξιολογημένο ως "Υποδειγματικό" - είναι ενδεικτικό της δυνατότητας να συνδυαστεί η διδασκαλία της ξένης γλώσσας και η εισαγωγή της τέχνης στις μικρές κιόλας τάξεις του Δημοτικού Σχολείου!

Το συγκεκριμένο σενάριο εμπλέκει στη διδασκαλία των Αγγλικών τη ζωγραφική και ειδικότερα, τα πορτραίτα ενός διάσημου καλλιτέχνη παγκόσμιου βεληνεκούς, το όνομα του οποίου σίγουρα, έστω ως απλή αναφορά, έχουν ήδη ακούσει τα μικρά παιδιά: του Pablo Picasso.
